First, I want to point out something that does not have to be obvious; I love Russia. Her people, culture and much of the history…However, I must say that developments (I might call it stagnation) over the last couple of years are now at risk due to political, legal and business stupidity and arrogance! Mr. Putin: I was in Russia when you came into power, I might be there when you leave…but if you want to prepare Russia for the future you will have to start using other tools and reflect that to your people and the international society. I’m asking you, since this will help us both. It’s a friendly suggestion.
My frustration now is the announcement of another delay in the ridiculous lawsuit against Telenor in Russia. The ownership in Vimpelcom is at stake simply because of a constructed company (Farimex), most likely controlled by oligarch Mikhail Friedman, have used Russia’s immature and fragile legal system to steal from foreign investors. How can foreign investors provide Russia with important funding and venture capital when international principles are put aside to serve the few and well connected in Russia?
I hope there will be a constructive and fair solution to this conflict between Telenor and Alfa Group, but I will not be surprised that there are too many people in Russia that see a great potential for easy and big money and therefore will become Telenor’s nightmare come true!
